*****The Virginia Off Road Series rules have changed since 2010. We advise to read through them fully.*****
Overview
Racers will compete in one of nine Race Categories as determined by their gender and ability (Expert, Sport, Beginner) or riding style for X-Cat and Single Speed. A racer’s category is determined by their XC race level. Race Styles consist of XC, Multisport/Enduro, and Endurance which have different point values and have those points counted towards the points total. A racer’s 7 highest scoring races out of our 20+ races count towards their total points. Bonus points will be awarded at year end for total number of races participated in for the Virginia Off Road Series season. PayDirt points are also awarded for time put into trail work throughout the year.

XCAT!
XCAT returns for 2011! The Category for racers that put
duration over speed. Recommended for those who typically race in Enduro style and longer events. For details, see below.
X-Cat participants are awarded points for Enduro, Multisport, and Endurance races. An X-Cat participant racing out of Category (i.e. XC Style races) will receive credit for races competed in for bonus points but will not receive points for placing in top 15.
XC/Singlespeed participants are awarded points for XC/Singlespeed, Multisport and Endurance races only. Enduro will not be scored for XC/Singlespeed in 2011.
All other XC Categories can still compete in Multisport
and Endurance races.
Category Selection / VORS Registration
There are nine VORS racer categories: Expert Men, Expert Women, Sport Men, Sport Women, Beginner Men, Beginner Women, Single Speed, X-Cat Men, and X-Cat Women. PLEASE chose the Category that best fits your abilities! It is not the letter of a rule but the spirit of fair racing that we expect Virginia Off Road Series athletes to respect. X-Cat is recommended for those that typically race in Enduro style races.
A racer is registered in their category in one of two ways: either by notifying us by online registration or by the first XC Style race completed. Until a racer is registered, their points will remain XCAT. If a racer registers online, they must race an "in category" race before the end of the year to qualify for the Series. A racer's name will appear in Pink on the standings page until properly registered. Only one category per athlete.
The Category chosen will be that racer’s category for the remainder of the year. If a racer races outside their category in an XC race, they will get credit for participating in the race for bonus points but the points earned for placement in top 15 in that race will not be awarded to the racer.
Race Styles / Age Groups
Though a racer’s category is determined by their XC category or X-Cat, many race styles are available to race throughout the Series. These include XC (lap-based mountain bike races), Enduro (time based mountain bike races), Mutlisport (more than 1 race discipline such as duathlon, triathlon) and Endurance (races 12 hours or more).
A racer must race at least once in their category to confirm their race category and will only receive points for races within their category, multisport, or endurance races. If a racer is registered for an XC category (XM, XW, SM, SW, SS, BM, or BW), they will not recieve points for racing Enduro or XXC races but will receive credit towards bonus points for doing the race. If a racer is registered X-Cat Men or Women, they will not receive points for racing in an XC race but will receive credit towards bonus points for doing the race.
Categories used by Race Directors may be broken up into age groups or specialty categories. VORS combines all age groups within a VORS category to determine points being awarded. Specialty categories such as Clydesdale are combined with the XC Category with the same total distance. When registering with specialty race categories, please note if it will be combined into your correct VORS category. It is the responsibility of the racer to make sure that the race category they register for will count towards their VORS category.
Online Registration - if a competitor registers online and needs to change categories,
the competitor must mail a Letter of Change to 611 w 33rd St,
Richmond, Va 23225 before the beginning of the 2011 season.
Please include previous Category chosen, new Category, Full Name,
Zip Code and Shirt Size. The official start of 2010 Virginia Off
Road Series is March 6, 2011 at the Camp Hilbert race.
Points
Points are awarded to the top 15 places in each category for that
style of race.
XC: Points are awarded to each category (XM, XW, SM, SW, BM, BW, SS) based on a 100-point scale. Age groups in each of those categories are combined and scored against each other. In the case of “other” categories (such as Clydesdale) they will be combined based on number of laps/gender.
Multisport/Enduro/XXC: Points are awarded by gender based on a 150-point scale. Age groups in each of those categories are combined and scored against each other. A racer in the top 15 male, female, and coed Duo-Enduros will be awarded points at the Enduro point scale divided by two. Race Directors have final say whether Duo Enduro will be included in overall Enduro scoring.
Exception: Beginner level Multisport races are awarded based on a XC(100-point scale). This includes the FORD Beginner races.
Endurance: Points are awarded by gender based on a 400-point scale. Genders for endurance races are: Male, Female, and Coed. Individuals will be grouped together with teams for awarding points and racers will be awarded points divided by number of racers on the team. (Example: If most laps are completed by a 4-person team, each team member will receive 100 points. If most laps are completed by a soloist, that person will receive 400 points.)
Youth Categories Exception: For 2011, the race subcategory High School Beginner and High School Sport will be combined with and awarded points in their respective categories. Due to inconsistencies with individual races in VORS, Junior Categories will not be scored for 2011.
7-Race Points Cap: Racers can race as many races as they want, but only the 7 highest scoring races will be used for their total points. On the racer’s eighth race and subsequent races, the lowest scoring race will be dropped from their points total.
Racing Out of Category - If a competitor races out of their chosen category, they will still receive race credit for their total races competed going towards their Bonus Point Percentage
